I became a professional storyteller in 2000 when I went freelance, getting bookings in schools, libraries, art centres, museums, and so on. Why do you think it is important to preserve folk tales? I have been declared the winner of this national competition - winning a £1000 prize and the chance to have my finished manuscript read by Marcus Gipps, commissioning editor of Gollancz. Take a walk through this county in the heart of England in the entertaining company of a local storyteller. There could be no better base for this than the stunning holistic education centre of Hawkwood College - which began as a language school, and which continues to offer a wide range of events, courses, celebrations and talks - many with a word-based focus. Kevan Manwaring is a writer, teacher and storyteller living in Stroud. Participants role-played scenes from the ballads — and, without much prompting, took on characters of different genders, ages and backgrounds to their own. The storyteller performers extempoire, or completely improvises.
This is an intriguing book, written by a local story teller and folklorist, this book collects tales old and new based in around Northamptonshire - a county a grew up close to in fact i went to school in the county. It was designed as a feature-length screenplay, and so it was interesting to see how it was going to work on stage, in a script-in-hand performance by members of Spaniel in the Works. Richly illustrated, these enchanting tales will appeal to lovers of folk music, storytelling and rattling good yarns. Previously, when performing solo, I have achieved this by switching from story to poetry I am no singer, but I am an experienced performance poet. He is the author of over twenty books including The Windsmith Elegy series of Mythic Reality novels; Desiring Dragons, Oxfordshire Folk Tales, Northamptonshire Folk Tales, The Bardic Handbook, and Ballad Tales ed. Nevertheless, some activity is informed and intentional. Beyond choosing a traditional British ballad I gave the contributors all writers and musicians I know, have seen or heard and been impressed by at some point carte blanche.
Of course, research may also explore the critical discourses around the subject, the reader experience, creative process, publishing, performance and multi-media platforms. I was also drawn here because of dear writer and storyteller friends who live in Stroud. Samuel Breton Troubadour entertains the audience at the Stroud Story Supper Last Friday saw a packed Black Book Cafe for quite probably our best Story Supper yet. We launched on World Book Day this year and our patron is novelist Jamila Gavin. And it would also be great fun. A large print of it hangs by my desk — a reminder of what can be achieved when you have a good idea.
However it was interesting how such fanciful stories could not only be given life but also a connection to the countryside around me. It is a novel-based Creative Writing PhD project - very exciting! And now the next marathon begins, in promoting it, getting it reviewed, and ensuring it is noticed, it sells, and it creates the opportunity for the next one, for there are plenty more ballad tales left to tell. As part of my novel project, I decided that a spoken word performance dramatizing some of the Border Ballads would be an interesting way to bring alive my research, widen its accessibility, and get diverse audience responses. After the book came out I toured it in venues across Oxfordshire to diverse audiences Woodstock Bookshop; Alice Day, Guildhall Oxford; Beatnik Albion Bookshop; Oxford Folk Weekend. Tam Lin; Thomas the Rhymer and less well-known examples. Desiring Dragons: creativity, imagination and Writer's Quest is the culmination of 13 years' teaching experience creative writing and 21 books.
Other projects include The Cotswold Word Centre. As someone who trained in art originally this has fed into my writing. It was a glittering affair. I walk my talk, and the material becomes a living reality. I think any writer would recognise these processes and find relief and encouragement in not being alone. Let me hear your words. They seem part of a spectrum. Encouraged by the success of Oxfordshire Folk Tales, I wrote a second collection, drawing upon tales from my old home county of Northamptonshire. This is a real privilege and will be the perfect environment for my book - which explores the folk traditions of the Lowlands. You need to make it vivid for the reader. My wish is to create a platform for all word-based culture in the region - ultimately creating a self-editing listings service for co-promotion, as well as a focus for resources and research.
